Background
Traffic congestion, particularly during the vacation/hurricane season, continues to increase for the Northern Outer Banks, with no relief in sight. NCDOT has been evaluating ways to ease traffic congestion for the past 10 years, but progress has been slow. Numerous alternatives have been evaluated and one has been selected: Build a bridge across the Mid-Currituck Sound as shown in the map on the About page.
Our organization has supported building a Mid-Currituck Bridge for a decade. Building a bridge would: reduce traffic congestion, save up to 36 miles in driving distance and an hour in driving time and provide an alternate route for hurricane evacuation…as well as create jobs and generate significant tax revenue for Currituck County and the state…in a project that would be largely financed by toll revenue.
The Problem
We are at an important crossroads now. NCDOT has completed its study and has selected building a Mid-Currituck Bridge as the best alternative. But we still have a long way to go, and there are still some very vocal critics on the sidelines that would like to stop the project.
We need to ensure that the project continues without significant delays. This means our state legislators must not change the funding that is already a part of the NCDOT appropriation, an investment in vital infrastructure that will be more than doubled by the unique public/private partnership funded by toll revenues. There is no other project that has such leverage of tax-payer dollars.
